QUOTES PORTFOLIO

QUOTES PROJECT

For this project, I chose to make many artworks that all represent the audacious misinterpretation of famous phrases, sayings, and quotes. All the pieces are made using mixed media collage.

Beware The Ides of March
Beware The Ides of March

This piece is about how once you start down the dark and violent path; it may forever dominate your destiny. The hands are leaving the foreground of flowers and joy, and are entering the background of red and danger. The sign warns the hands to not grab for the sword, but they ignore it.

The Earth Has Music
The Earth Has Music

The full title of this piece is: "The Earth Has Music For Those Who Listen". This piece is about how, if you are open to it, the world can be a beautiful and happy place (which is represented by the purple character in the middle). However, some people are shy or cold, and are closed off to the joys of the world. These people are represented by the gray-scale character in the center, hiding in the protective purple robes of the larger figure, as they shield themselves from the world’s music.

At a Fork in The Road, Take it.
At a Fork in The Road, Take it.

This piece is about decision making, and was really relevant in my life at a time when I was in the college selection process.

Make Love, Not War
Make Love, Not War

This piece is about the contrast between Bonobos and Chimpanzees. Both species are very closely related great apes, but Chimpanzees are notoriously warlike and violent, while Bonobos are very loving. In this piece, the Bonobos are along the bottom being happy and loving each other, but the chimpanzees are on top with their weapons and instruments. The Chimpanzees see the wonderful lives that the Bonobos lead, and want to have that joy too, but do not understand how to obtain it.

Ignorance is Bliss
Ignorance is Bliss

This piece is about childhood innocence. I am connecting the ideas of innocence and ignorance with each other, because they both are involved in not knowing certain things. Ignorance is usually seen as a negative trait, but I think it has its positive qualities. Children are ignorant of the real adult world of work, stress, finances, and responsibility. Instead, children live in the magical world of joy, unicorns, princesses and dinosaurs- but this is not a bad thing.

King of a One Horse Town
King of a One Horse Town

This piece was about a king who is luxurious and glorious, but on the inside he has no people and no family and no followers, and even though he does live a luxurious life, in the end he is a king of nothing.

Another Sucker is Born Every Minute
Another Sucker is Born Every Minute

This piece was about misinterpreting the word “sucker” as a sucking candy instead of as a customer.

Rise and Shine
Rise and Shine

This piece was very simple and easy to understand just by looking at it. It is just a sun and all the animals in a glorious beach.

Here, Marie Antoinette is flying around in her spaceship shooting cake at citizens who flee in terror.

Does a Bear Poop in The Woods?
Does a Bear Poop in The Woods?

This piece is about taking something small and unimportant, and unnecessarily being unhealthily worried or stressed about it. The question of whether or not a bear poops in the woods is so obvious and unimportant, but the scientist still is fretting over the answer.
